Facts & Short history of Missoula

Archaeological investigations suggest that the first inhabitants of the area where Missoula, MT lies today were the American Indians from the Salish tribe. According to the local story the name of "Missoula" comes from the Salish word "nmesuletk", which in English translation means river of "ambush/surprise", and represents the Salish name for the Clark Fork river.

No permanent "white" settlements were found in the area that date before 1860, when Francis Worden and C. P. Higgins opened the Hellgate Village trading post on the Blackfoot River, near the eastern part of Missoula.

During the 2008 census, the population of Missoula City was estimated at a number of little over 107 000 inhabitants, making it the 2nd largest city in the state of Montana.
